What do Oriental cockroaches look like?
Oriental cockroaches are large cockroaches measuring approximately 1-inch in length (males are slightly smaller). They’re shiny black to very dark brown in color. Females have very short wings that do not function and although males of this species have wings that cover about three-quarters of their abdomens, they are unable to fly as well.
When are oriental cockroaches most active?
Biology and behaviors of Oriental cockroaches
Female Oriental cockroaches produce about eight egg capsules (ootheca) per lifetime. Each one contains approximately 16 eggs. Incubation period for the Oriental cockroach is about 42 to 81 days and upon hatching, nymphs will go through seven molts before transitioning to adults.
Oriental cockroaches are often found outdoors and prefer warm, damp, and shady areas. Drops in temperature or periods of drought may cause these insects to move indoors.
Where are you likely to find Oriental cockroaches indoors?
When Oriental cockroaches move indoors, they’re commonly found in basements, crawl spaces, kitchens, bathrooms, under sinks, garbage disposals, and in other areas that are damp and cool.
What do Oriental cockroaches eat?
Oriental cockroaches will eat just about anything they can find and although they prefer starchy food, they will feed on decaying organic matter, trash, and even sewage.
Signs of an Oriental cockroach infestation
An Oriental cockroach problem may be identified by the following signs:
- Live or dead cockroaches found at or below ground level indoors
- Dark brown or reddish egg capsules
- Strong musty odor
Remember, these cockroaches are typically active at night so seeing one scurrying about during the day could be an indication of a larger infestation.
Are Oriental cockroaches dangerous?
Oriental cockroaches hang out and feed in some very unsanitary places before they move indoors including sewers. As a result, they not only carry bacteria, viruses, and other disease-producing organisms on their bodies but transmit them to food, food prep areas, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. This can lead to serious and adverse health conditions.
